Hello, this is the iDID Magazine editorial team. June started with bad weather. Half of the year is already almost over, and I can almost hear people saying "Whoa!" Anyway, this time we'll be discussingCool design! Live poster for a comedian.I've put together a summary of the posters that caught my eye.Posters advertising the performances of the many comedians who are there. What kind of individuality do they display? Once I started wondering about it, it became a nagging thought like the damp humidity of the rainy season, and that's how I ended up writing this article. Let's start preparing for early summer while soaking up the uniqueness of these comedians.
Here you go!

1. Tokyo 03

“FROLIC A HOLIC” (2023)
"Staying Close Together and Sharing the Loss" (2023)

It's been a hot topic lately! 'FROLIC A HOLIC' features Tokyo 03 vertically and Creepy Nuts horizontally woven together like a tapestry. The fascinating aspect of treating people like objects, and simultaneously, the fascinating aspect of revealing the structure and rawness of things. In "Stuck Together, But Disadvantaged," objects are used to create the faces of three people that, surprisingly, look strangely familiar. There's a sense that Yuni Yoshida's visuals are exploring "something raw and visceral that lies between humans and objects," and this matches the essence of Tokyo 03's intellectual comedy.

2. Lalande

"The Joke" (2023)
From left to right: "Congratulatory Telegram vol.2" (2022), "Congratulatory Telegram" (2020)

This was also a hot topic! Those familiar with Lalande were surprised by the innovative visuals, while those unfamiliar with Lalande were naturally drawn in by the impactful poster visual for "The Joke."Both the "Joke" and "Congratulatory Telegram" posters have an atmosphere that makes you think, "Are these posters for a play?!"Perhaps because Saya comes from an advertising background, all of her designs have incredible visual appeal.

3. A Masso

“Funny” (2023)
"The Paradox of the Editor-in-Chief" (2019)

In "Humorous," the two members of A-Masso are enveloped in the dark fantasy worldview of painter and picture book author Yuko Higuchi. In "The Paradox of Editor-in-Chief Ran," the anarchic and pop worldview of illustrator Saigo no Shudan takes center stage. Both are interesting,What's unique is that instead of putting the two members of A-Masso front and center, the focus is on the overall worldview.

4. Jarujaru

"JARUJARU TOWER 2021 - My Beloved You -"
"JARUJARU TOWER 2022 Aigachu"

Following in the footsteps of A Masso, Jarujaru also makes effective use of illustrations. For "JARUJARU TOWER 2021 - My Beloved You -", Isamu Gakiya was in charge of the key visual. The illustrations, which seem to be modeled after the two of them, are spiced up by Jarujaru's slightly strange and mysterious worldview. The collaboration with OSAMU GOODS at "JARUJARU TOWER 2022 Aigachu" is also incredibly cute!

5. Air Staircase

"anna" (2021)
From left to right: 'baby' (2019), 'fart' (2022)

The key visual for all of Kuuki Kaidan's solo performances is handled by video director Toshio Doi.They all look like movie posters.Given that Kuuki Kaidan has strong characters, you might expect them to showcase their personalities, but they don't appear in 'anan' or 'baby' (they did appear in their earlier works). It feels like you can sense what they value... However, in their latest work, 'Uncensored' (2023), they do appear again in the key visual!

6. Men's Swing

"There's something I'd like to try" (2023)
From top left: "Engawa Psyche" (2019), "Tendonki" (2021), "Hi no Ata Room" (2019)

The world-building of Male Blanco is so superb that you become completely engrossed in it as you watch. Each design certainly has its own unique worldview. However, while past designs mainly featured people and typography, the most recent ones seem to be primarily illustrations. Since Jun Kawana is in charge of all the promotional art for the comedy live shows, I would really like to know why he made this change.

7. Yoshizumi

Two Teacups (2023)
From left to right: "The Gentian That Doesn't Bloom" (2022), "An Impudent Turkish Souvenir" (2021)

In her latest solo performance, "Two Teacups," to be held in July, Yoshizumi plays a madam with a mannequin-like, almost insane expression. In "The Gentian That Doesn't Bloom" and "An Arrogant Turkish Souvenir," she is dressed in a very simple outfit: just a backdrop for the photoshoot, some text, and Yoshizumi herself. What they all have in common is that it comes across as "a one-woman show, performed solely by Yoshizumi."Her stoic spirit, her determination to "do comedy with nothing but herself," is truly impressive.
Furthermore, designer Mori Henmi has worked on many other projects besides those for Yoshizumi, including posters, album covers, and logos for the comedy industry.

8. The Land of Gold

"Bruise" (2023)
Hanamaru (2022)

Kin no Kuni, a young comedy duo that debuted in 2017, is another group whose visuals resemble movie posters. The visuals, which are somewhat mismatched in a good way, further enhance the cinematic feel. While Kuuki Kaidan has a Western film feel, Kin no Kuni has a Japanese film feel, and especially an independent theater vibe. They are also known for their acting skills, so they may be intentionally giving off an actor-like impression.

9. Miki

"Miki Manga 2020" (2020)
From left to right: 'Mikiman 2018', 'Mikiman 2023', 'Mikiman 2022'

In Miki's case, the focus is on the characters, capturing their comical, cool, and adorable sides from various angles.Since "Miki Man" means "comedy duo," I suspect the design naturally focused on the two members rather than a specific worldview. It's interesting to compare it to Yoshizumi's poster. Perhaps the charm of comedy design lies in how it allows you to discover a cool side of a comedian that you didn't know before.

10. GAG

"GAG x Nippon no Shacho" (2023)
From left to right: GAG x Kagaya, GAG x Tontsukatan, GAG x Long Coat Daddy (2023)

Speaking of characters, GAG might be another example. The photos are in black and white, and only two colors are used in the background. While the use of the props is reminiscent of a two-man show, it's not particularly distinctive, and their expressionless poses within that context feel perfectly natural and characteristic of them. However, in reality, they perform chaotic situational comedy sketches that unfold like a drama, so perhaps they are deliberately toning down GAG's appeal, in contrast to Miki, to entice people into the venue.

11. ZAZY

ZAZY's Big Solo LIVE "Daisai Tori" (2022)
From left to right: 'ULTRA VIP' (2020), 'ATENALI' (2019), 'SHINING EMERALDER' (2021)

The poster for ZAZY's solo live show "Daisai Tori" isApparently, everything except the title and frame was collaged and designed by ZAZY himself. These are just incredibly stylish... 'ULTRA VIP', 'ATENALI', and 'SHINING EMERALDER' were all created by artLarge, and they all evoke the feel of movie posters or hard rock band album covers.

12. Knights

"One thing is for sure: it's not 'Wasshoi'" (2018)
From left to right: "Elle and Essence's Essentials" (2019), "It Was Tasteless Ice" (2017)

From his positions as Vice Chairman and Director of the Asakusa Manzai Association,I was expecting a slightly old-fashioned poster, but an unexpected turn of events awaited me.The surreal gags and humor are perfectly matched by the impactful illustrations that catch the eye. The illustrations are by the manga artist Renoir Brothers, and while they seem to be the complete opposite of the Asakusa Manzai Association, the contrast is exquisite. The live show titles, which are also the basis for the illustrations, are said to be excerpts from tweets by the late Keiko Utsumi.

"It's definitely not a 'Wasshoi' (a Japanese cheering chant)" "An essential item for El and S" "It was tasteless ice"
Illustration:The Renoir Brothers

13. Mama Tart

“THE FIRST MARCHAN GOMENNE” (2023)
Starting from the top left and going clockwise: "Ma-gome Constitution Pork Kimchi", "Exciting Station" (2021)
"MARGOME don't here" "If you're going to do a solo show, at least give me a call" (2022)

In this selection process, this duo was the only one that did not create a key visual that included live-action elements. Personally, I thought they should at least use live-action footage to show their faces and promote themselves, especially for their first solo live performance, but I had absolutely no need to worry about that. Because,The dynamic illustrations, perfectly suited to their image, were the most effective way to convey their charm. In the world of comedy, finding creators who can design in a way that suits your individuality is an extremely important factor.

14. Soitsudoitsu

"These guys are amazing" (2021)
From left to right: "Everyone's Happy" (2021), "Say Hello to That Guy" (2019)

Speaking of illustrations, we simply can't leave them out. In addition to their heartwarming illustrations, the handwritten titles of the live performances and other information give them a unique style, and the elusive personalities of the two characters are perfectly captured here.Apparently, the artist who drew this illustration, Sekino, is a friend of the two, and knowing that this visual likely reflects their close relationship makes it even more enjoyable.

"These guys are amazing," "Everyone's happy," "Say hello to him for me."

15. Dow 90000

"Just going back to blinking again" (2023)
"I'll throw it away for now, but I'll keep it" (2022), "It's always New Year's" (2022)

Dow 90000, a theater unit currently attracting attention and receiving praise from many comedians. While I have some prior knowledge that they are a conversational comedy that goes beyond sketches, to be honest, I still don't know much about them. However,The key visual changes its appearance with each performance.I was so drawn to them that I simply had to feature them this time! I'm definitely going to go see one of their performances!

Just two more!

Although they didn't make it into the top 15, there were two poster visuals that I really wanted to share... so please allow me to introduce them as well!

Vacuum Jessica Gaku

"Kawamata Kakeru" (2023)

The key visual perfectly matches the live concert title and concept.According to designer Shirataki, it was created with the concept of the multiverse in mind.
Incidentally, the live show title is a play on the real name of Shinku Jessica Gaku, Kawamata Takeru. The title is awesome!

Design:Shiraki

東京ホテイソン

“Pun Persimmon” (2022)

This is the hometown of Takeru, who is in charge of the comedic retorts.Their fusion of modern and Japanese elements is a perfect match, precisely because they incorporate Bitchu Kagura, a traditional performing art from Okayama, into their comedic style. The plot he's holding in his hand is just right, not too flashy, and perfectly matches the title.

The end

Hopefully, you got a glimpse into the editorial team's preferences. We got completely absorbed in the selection process and had a hard time deciding who to feature.
I've included the production credits to the best of my knowledge. Please also send us your comments like, "This is it!"And please tell me your favorite poster.

See you again!
